Description

This classic wonton soup is warm, comforting, and full of flavor. Delicate pork-filled wontons are gently simmered in a rich, savory broth, topped with green onions and bok choy. It’s a satisfying dish that’s surprisingly easy to make at home.

Ingredients

For the Wontons:

  • 1/2 lb ground pork

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • 1 green onion, finely chopped

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper

  • 24 wonton wrappers

For the Soup:

  • 6 cups chicken broth

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger

  • 2 cups baby bok choy, chopped

  • 2 green onions, sliced

  • Salt, to taste

  • White pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the Wontons:
In a bowl, mix ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, green onion, salt, and white pepper until well combined.
Place about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, fold the wrapper into a triangle, and press the edges to seal. Bring the two corners together and press to seal.

  2. Cook the Wontons:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the wontons in batches and cook for 4–5 minutes, or until they float and the filling is cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon.

  3. Make the Soup:
In a separate pot, bring the chicken broth to a simmer. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, and ginger. Stir in bok choy and cook for 2–3 minutes, until just tender.

  4. Assemble:
Divide the cooked wontons among serving bowls. Ladle the hot broth and bok choy over the wontons. Garnish with sliced green onions and season with salt and white pepper to taste.

Notes

  • You can freeze extra uncooked wontons for later—just place them in a single layer on a baking sheet, freeze, then transfer to a freezer bag.

  • For a vegetarian version, swap pork for finely chopped mushrooms and tofu.
