- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 cups water or vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro (optional for garnish)
Instructions
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear; drain well.
- In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic, sauté until soft and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
- Stir in the turmeric and cumin, cooking for another 30 seconds.
- Add the rice and stir to coat it with the spices and oil.
- Pour in the water or vegetable broth, add salt and pepper, and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-18 minutes until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from heat and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro if desired before serving.
Notes
- Use vegetable broth instead of water for extra flavor.
- Adjust the amount of turmeric to taste; more for deeper color and flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
