Description

Pretzel Christmas Crack, also known as Pretzel Toffee, is a delightful holiday treat combining salty pretzels with rich buttery toffee, melted chocolate, and festive sprinkles or candies. This easy-to-make recipe involves layering pretzels with a homemade toffee glaze, baking briefly to bubble, then topping with melted chocolate and your favorite colorful toppings. Perfect for sharing during the holidays or enjoying as a sweet snack!

Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40-48 pretzel crisps (or Pretzel Crackers, or 2-3 cups pretzels, not sticks)

Toffee Topping

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks, unsalted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)

Chocolate Topping

  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Decorations

  • ½ cup sprinkles (or M&M’s, or candies of choice)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (175℃) to prepare for baking the toffee layer.
  2. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a rimmed 15″×10″ sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil sprayed with cooking spray, or use a nonstick silicone baking mat for easy removal.
  3. Arrange Pretzels: Place the pretzel crisps in a single even layer on the bottom of the pan. Break a few pieces if necessary to fill gaps so the entire pan surface is covered.
  4. Make Toffee: In a medium pot over medium-low heat, melt the butter and stir in the packed brown sugar. Bring to a rolling boil, stirring occasionally, and cook for 3 minutes until bubbling and amber-colored. Remove from heat and immediately pour evenly over the pretzel layer, spreading quickly to cover all pretzels.
  5. Bake Toffee: Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes until the toffee layer starts to bubble.
  6. Add Chocolate: Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let sit 1-2 minutes, then spread the melted chocolate evenly using a spatula. If chocolate doesn’t melt fully, return to the oven for 1-2 minutes and spread again.
  7. Decorate: Scatter sprinkles or your chosen candies evenly on top of the melted chocolate.
  8. Cool and Set: Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour until the chocolate and toffee are hardened.
  9. Break and Serve: Flip the tray over, peel off parchment paper or foil, and break or cut the toffee into pieces. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • To achieve the perfect toffee texture, use a candy thermometer to cook the toffee mixture to 270℉-290℉ if available.
  • You can substitute sprinkles with M&M’s or any favorite candies for decoration.
  • Store leftover Pretzel Christmas Crack in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • For quicker chocolate melting, you can briefly microwave the chocolate chips before spreading if desired.
  • Breaking pretzels to fill gaps ensures a consistent toffee layer across the pan.
