Description

Soft, fluffy, and flavorful homemade garlic naan that’s perfect for serving with Indian curries or enjoying on its own.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter or ghee (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  2. Add yogurt and oil, then gradually mix in warm milk and water to form a soft dough.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth. Cover and let it rest for at least 1 hour.
  4. Divide the dough into 6 equal balls.
  5. Roll out each ball into an oval or round shape, about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Sprinkle minced garlic and press it gently into the surface of the dough.
  7. Heat a skillet or tawa over medium-high heat. Place the naan garlic-side up on the hot skillet.
  8. Cook for 1–2 minutes until bubbles form, then flip and cook the garlic side for another 1–2 minutes until golden brown spots appear.
  9. Brush with melted butter or ghee and sprinkle with chopped cilantro if desired.
  10. Serve hot with your favorite curry or enjoy on its own.

Notes

  • Resting the dough is crucial for soft naan.
  • You can cook naan in the oven under a broiler for a charred effect.
  • For vegan version, use plant-based yogurt and oil instead of dairy products.
