Ingredients
Scale
Chocolate Cupcakes
- 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box – typically eggs, oil, and water)
Frosting and Decorations
- 1 can chocolate frosting or homemade chocolate buttercream
- 12 chocolate wafer cookies or fudge stripe cookies
- 12 sugar ice cream cones
- 1 cup black candy melts or black chocolate coating
- Halloween sprinkles or colored sanding sugar
- Assorted decorative candies or colored icing (orange, purple, green) for piping
Instructions
- Prepare and bake cupcakes. Preheat the oven according to the cake mix instructions. Fill cupcake liners two-thirds full with the prepared chocolate batter. Bake the cupcakes as directed on the box, usually for 18–22 minutes. Once baked, transfer cupcakes to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
- Frost the cupcakes. Using chocolate frosting or homemade chocolate buttercream, frost each cooled cupcake with a generous swirl, creating a smooth surface for the witch hat decoration.
- Melt candy coating for witch hats. In a microwave-safe bowl, heat the black candy melts in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each interval until the coating is fully melted and smooth.
- Dip sugar cones to create witch hats. Coat each sugar ice cream cone by dipping it into the melted black candy coating until fully covered. Let excess coating drip off, then place the cones upside down on parchment paper and allow them to harden completely for about 10–15 minutes.
- Decorate the witch hats. Once the coated cones have set, decorate them with Halloween sprinkles, piped colored icing bands, or other festive designs using orange, purple, and green icing to resemble whimsical witch hats.
- Assemble the cupcakes. Place one chocolate wafer cookie on top of each frosted cupcake to form the brim of the hat. Gently press a decorated coated cone in the center of the cookie to complete the hat. Optionally add more decorative icing or sprinkles where the cone meets the cookie for extra detail.
Notes
- You can color the candy melts with oil-based food coloring if black isn’t available.
- Store cupcakes in a cool place to keep the chocolate hats from melting.
- Great activity for kids to decorate their own witch hats!
