Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons sugar
- ¾ teaspoon sea salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups full-fat Greek yogurt
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Optional Toppings
- Everything bagel seasoning
- Poppy seeds
- Sesame seeds
- Flaky sea salt
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the bagels.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and sea salt until well combined.
- Add Greek Yogurt: Stir in the Greek yogurt thoroughly. The mixture will be crumbly or clumpy at this stage. Gather the dough into a ball on a lightly floured surface. If the dough feels too dry, add a teaspoon of water or a small spoonful more of yogurt to help it come together.
- Knead and Divide Dough: Knead the dough roughly 10-15 times, then divide it into six equal pieces. You can either cut or pull the dough apart to separate the pieces.
- Shape Bagels: Roll each piece into a rope about 1 inch in diameter, then form it into a circle, pressing the ends together securely. Place each shaped bagel on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Apply Egg Wash and Toppings: Whisk the egg in a small bowl and brush this egg wash all over each bagel, covering every visible surface including the centers. Sprinkle with your choice of optional toppings like everything bagel seasoning or sesame seeds.
- Bake the Bagels: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 19-23 minutes or until the bagels turn golden brown. Avoid overbaking to keep the bagels soft.
- Cool and Serve: Let the bagels cool slightly before serving. They are delicious warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- The dough might seem a bit dry initially; adding a little water or extra yogurt helps achieve the right consistency.
- Ensure to brush the egg wash thoroughly, including the inside of the bagel holes, for even browning and adhesion of toppings.
- You can customize toppings to your liking or leave them plain.
- Do not overbake to keep the bagels soft and chewy.
- Use full-fat Greek yogurt for best texture and flavor.
