Description

Grandma Georgia’s Chicken and Dumplings is a hearty Southern American comfort food recipe made effortlessly in a crock pot. Tender chicken, fresh vegetables, and fluffy dumplings combine in a creamy chicken broth for a warm, satisfying meal perfect for family gatherings or cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Vegetables

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 (10.5-ounce) can cream of chicken soup

Dumplings

  • 1 (16.3-ounce) can refrigerated biscuit dough
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crock pot base: Place the chicken, diced onion, sliced carrots, chopped celery, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, dried thyme, poultry seasoning, and bay leaf into the crock pot. Pour in the chicken broth and stir in the can of cream of chicken soup until well combined for a flavorful base.
  2. Cook the chicken and vegetables: Cover and cook on low for 6–7 hours or on high for 3–4 hours, until the chicken is fully cooked and the vegetables are tender, infusing the broth with rich flavors.
  3. Shred the chicken: Carefully remove the chicken from the crock pot, shred it using two forks, then return the shredded meat back into the crock pot. Discard the bay leaf to ensure clean flavor.
  4. Add the dumplings: Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into small 1-inch pieces and gently stir them into the crock pot mixture. Cover and cook on high for an additional 1 hour until the dumplings are cooked through, fluffy, and have absorbed the savory broth.
  5. Garnish and serve: Optionally garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and fresh flavor. Serve the chicken and dumplings warm, perfect for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • For a more traditional flavor, use homemade biscuit dough or dumplings instead of canned dough.
  • If you prefer a thicker base, stir in a cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with a little cold water) during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • This dish reheats beautifully and is ideal for leftovers.
  • Adjust seasoning at the end according to taste.
