Description

These easy matcha cookies are soft, chewy, and packed with earthy matcha flavor. Brown butter adds a rich, nutty twist that takes them to the next level. Perfect with a cup of tea or coffee!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon matcha green tea powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • Optional: white chocolate chips or chopped white chocolate (1/2 cup)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Continue cooking, stirring often, until it foams and turns golden brown with a nutty aroma. Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the browned butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Mix until smooth.

  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix until well combined.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, matcha powder, baking soda, and salt.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.

  6. If using, fold in white chocolate chips or chunks.

  7. Cover the dough and chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (optional but recommended for better flavor and texture).

  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  9. Scoop dough into 1.5-tablespoon-sized balls and place on the baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.

  10. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden and centers look just set.

  11. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a more vibrant green color, use a high-quality culinary grade matcha.

  • Don’t skip chilling the dough if you want thicker, chewier cookies.

  • Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
