Description

This easy homemade apple pie recipe features a buttery, flaky crust filled with tender, cinnamon-spiced apples. It’s a classic dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 6-8 tbsp ice water
  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until dough holds together.
  4. Divide dough in half, shape into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  5. In another bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice. Toss until apples are evenly coated.
  6. Roll out one disk of dough and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate.
  7. Pour apple mixture into the crust and dot with a few pieces of butter (optional).
  8. Roll out the second disk of dough and place over the apples. Trim, seal, and flute the edges. Cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
  9. In a small bowl, beat the egg with milk and brush over the top crust.
  10. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
  11. Cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought pie crust for convenience.
  • Cover edges with foil if they brown too quickly during baking.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
