Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 6-8 tbsp ice water
- 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (for filling)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until dough holds together.
- Divide dough in half, shape into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- In another bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and lemon juice. Toss until apples are evenly coated.
- Roll out one disk of dough and fit it into a 9-inch pie plate.
- Pour apple mixture into the crust and dot with a few pieces of butter (optional).
- Roll out the second disk of dough and place over the apples. Trim, seal, and flute the edges. Cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape.
- In a small bowl, beat the egg with milk and brush over the top crust.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
- Cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- You can use store-bought pie crust for convenience.
- Cover edges with foil if they brown too quickly during baking.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
