Description

This crispy fried cornbread is a Southern favorite — golden brown on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. Made with simple ingredients and fried to perfection, it’s the perfect side for chili, greens, or a big plate of BBQ.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal (yellow or white)

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onions (optional)

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or bacon grease (plus more for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.

  2. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg until well combined.

  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in chopped onions if using.

  4. Heat about 1/4 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.

  5. Once hot, drop spoonfuls of batter into the skillet and flatten slightly with the back of the spoon.

  6. Fry for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  7. Remove and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  8. Serve warm with butter, honey, or alongside your favorite Southern dish.

Notes

  • You can use bacon grease instead of oil for extra flavor.

  • Make smaller patties for appetizer-sized bites.

  • These are best served hot and fresh, but can be reheated in a skillet or air fryer.
