A festive and hearty pasta dish perfect for the holiday season, featuring rich tomato sauce, Italian sausage, and seasonal herbs to bring out the Christmas spirit in every bite.
Ingredients
- 1 lb pasta (penne or rigatoni)
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
Instructions
- Cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add Italian sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
- Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
- Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper.
- Simmer the sauce for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and mix until well coated.
- Stir in Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley.
- Transfer the pasta to a baking dish, sprinkle with mozzarella cheese, and broil for 3-5 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.

- Use spicy Italian sausage for an extra kick.
- Add sautéed bell peppers or spinach for extra veggies.
