Description

A festive and hearty pasta dish perfect for the holiday season, featuring rich tomato sauce, Italian sausage, and seasonal herbs to bring out the Christmas spirit in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb pasta (penne or rigatoni)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add Italian sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  3. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook for another 1 minute.
  4. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Simmer the sauce for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Add the cooked pasta to the sauce and mix until well coated.
  7. Stir in Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley.
  8. Transfer the pasta to a baking dish, sprinkle with mozzarella cheese, and broil for 3-5 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.

Notes

  • Use spicy Italian sausage for an extra kick.
  • Add sautéed bell peppers or spinach for extra veggies.
  • Can be made ahead and reheated before serving.
