Description

This creamy, cheesy dip is the ultimate companion to soft pretzels. It’s rich, smooth, and comes together quickly with simple ingredients. Whether you’re hosting a party or just craving a snack, this cheese dip will hit the spot.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard (optional, for a little tang)

  • A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.

  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly to make a roux.

  3. Slowly whisk in the milk, making sure there are no lumps.

  4. Cook the mixture for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly.

  5. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

  6. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, ground mustard, and cayenne if using.

  7. Stir to combine, taste, and adjust seasoning as needed.

  8. Serve warm with soft pretzels. Reheat gently if needed.

Notes

  • For extra creaminess, stir in 2 oz cream cheese with the cheddar.

  • Swap cheddar for a mix of cheeses like Monterey Jack or Gouda.

  • Keep the dip warm in a mini slow cooker or fondue pot for serving.

  • If dip thickens too much as it sits, add a splash of milk and stir.
