Description
Juicy and flavorful Chinese-style barbecue chicken marinated in a sweet and savory sauce, then oven-roasted to perfection.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs
- 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1.5 tbsp Shaoxing wine (or dry sherry)
- 2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1/2 tsp red food coloring (optional)
- Scallions or sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, oyster sauce, Shaoxing wine, five-spice powder, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and red food coloring if using.
- Add chicken thighs and coat well. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking tray with foil and place a wire rack over it.
- Arrange marinated chicken on the rack. Reserve the marinade.
- Roast for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, simmer the reserved marinade in a saucepan until slightly thickened.
- Brush chicken with the thickened marinade, flip, and brush the other side. Roast for another 10 minutes until caramelized and cooked through.
- Optionally broil for 1-2 minutes for a charred finish.
- Let rest for 5 minutes, garnish, and serve.
Notes
- Chicken breast can be used but may be drier than thighs.
- Marinate overnight for best flavor.
- Leftovers can be used in stir-fries or sandwiches.
- Food coloring is optional and only affects appearance.
- Ensure internal temperature reaches 165°F.
