Description

This cabbage roll casserole gives you all the cozy flavors of traditional cabbage rolls without the fuss of rolling! It’s a hearty and comforting dish made with layers of tender cabbage, ground beef, rice, and a rich tomato sauce. Perfect for a weeknight dinner or feeding a crowd.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1/2 cup uncooked white rice

  • 1 small head green cabbage, chopped

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.

  3. Add garlic and ground beef. Cook until beef is browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat.

  4. Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.

  5. Stir in uncooked rice and remove from heat.

  6. In a large baking dish (9×13), layer half the chopped cabbage, then the meat mixture, then the remaining cabbage.

  7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.

  8. Remove foil, sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top, and bake uncovered for another 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

  9. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can use ground turkey or pork instead of beef.

  • Brown rice works too—just increase the baking time slightly.

  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes if you want a little heat.
