Description
Blueberry Strawberry French Toast Casserole is a delicious make-ahead breakfast bake featuring layers of bread, fresh berries, and a rich custard, perfect for brunch or special occasions.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 10 cups)
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Powdered sugar or maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread half of the bread cubes in the dish, then layer with half the blueberries and strawberries. Repeat with remaining bread and berries.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and berries, pressing the bread gently to soak up the custard.
- Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove casserole from the fridge while the oven preheats.
- Bake covered for 30 minutes. Then uncover and bake an additional 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden and the center is set.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup if desired.
Notes
- Use day-old bread for best texture.
- You can substitute frozen berries, just thaw and drain them first.
- Add a cream cheese layer for extra richness.
