Description

Blueberry Strawberry French Toast Casserole is a delicious make-ahead breakfast bake featuring layers of bread, fresh berries, and a rich custard, perfect for brunch or special occasions.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (about 10 cups)
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar or maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread half of the bread cubes in the dish, then layer with half the blueberries and strawberries. Repeat with remaining bread and berries.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and berries, pressing the bread gently to soak up the custard.
  4. Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove casserole from the fridge while the oven preheats.
  6. Bake covered for 30 minutes. Then uncover and bake an additional 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden and the center is set.
  7. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for best texture.
  • You can substitute frozen berries, just thaw and drain them first.
  • Add a cream cheese layer for extra richness.
