Description

These Asian Garlic Steak Skewers feature tender sirloin cubes marinated in a savory blend of soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger, then grilled to perfection. Garnished with toasted sesame seeds and fresh green onions, they make a flavorful and easy main course perfect for summer BBQs or quick weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Steak and Marinade

  • 1 1/2 pounds sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

For Garnish and Assembly

  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • Bamboo or metal skewers (if bamboo, soaked in water for 30 minutes before use)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Marinade: In a large bowl or zip-top bag, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes if using to create a flavorful marinade for the steak.
  2. Marinate the Steak: Add the sirloin steak cubes to the marinade and toss to coat them evenly. Cover the bowl or seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 6 hours to deepen the flavor.
  3. Soak Skewers: If using bamboo skewers, submerge them in water for 30 minutes before grilling to prevent burning during cooking.
  4. Preheat the Grill: Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat, ensuring it is hot enough to sear the steak cubes quickly.
  5. Assemble Skewers: Thread the marinated steak cubes evenly onto the prepared skewers, leaving a little space between pieces for even cooking.
  6. Grill the Skewers: Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until the steak reaches your preferred level of doneness, turning carefully to avoid losing juices.
  7. Rest and Garnish: Remove the skewers from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

  • For added variety, alternate steak cubes with chunks of bell pepper, onion, or pineapple on the skewers before grilling.
  • Serve these skewers alongside steamed rice, noodles, or a refreshing cucumber salad for a complete meal.
  • If you don’t have a grill, use a grill pan on the stovetop as a great alternative.
  • Marinating for longer than 6 hours is not recommended as the acid in the marinade can start to break down the meat’s texture.
