Ingredients
Scale
Steak and Marinade
- 1 1/2 pounds sirloin steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
For Garnish and Assembly
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
- 2 green onions, sliced
- Bamboo or metal skewers (if bamboo, soaked in water for 30 minutes before use)
Instructions
- Prepare the Marinade: In a large bowl or zip-top bag, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and red pepper flakes if using to create a flavorful marinade for the steak.
- Marinate the Steak: Add the sirloin steak cubes to the marinade and toss to coat them evenly. Cover the bowl or seal the bag and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 6 hours to deepen the flavor.
- Soak Skewers: If using bamboo skewers, submerge them in water for 30 minutes before grilling to prevent burning during cooking.
- Preheat the Grill: Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat, ensuring it is hot enough to sear the steak cubes quickly.
- Assemble Skewers: Thread the marinated steak cubes evenly onto the prepared skewers, leaving a little space between pieces for even cooking.
- Grill the Skewers: Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until the steak reaches your preferred level of doneness, turning carefully to avoid losing juices.
- Rest and Garnish: Remove the skewers from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions before serving.
Notes
- For added variety, alternate steak cubes with chunks of bell pepper, onion, or pineapple on the skewers before grilling.
- Serve these skewers alongside steamed rice, noodles, or a refreshing cucumber salad for a complete meal.
- If you don’t have a grill, use a grill pan on the stovetop as a great alternative.
- Marinating for longer than 6 hours is not recommended as the acid in the marinade can start to break down the meat’s texture.
