Ingredients
Scale
Fritter Batter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- â…“ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 1 ½ cups peeled and finely chopped apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt until evenly combined. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter together. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently stir just until the batter comes together. Fold in the finely chopped apples carefully to distribute them evenly.
- Heat the Oil: Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot and heat over medium heat until reaching 350°F (175°C). Maintaining the oil temperature is key for even frying and a crispy crust.
- Fry the Apple Fritter Bites: Using a small cookie scoop or spoon, carefully drop heaping tablespoons of batter into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side until the bites turn golden brown and are cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters and transfer them to a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Make the Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and pourable. Adjust the milk quantity for desired glaze thickness.
- Glaze the Fritter Bites: While still warm, dip each fritter bite into the glaze or drizzle the glaze over the top. Allow them to set slightly so the glaze adheres, then serve warm for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- Best served warm to enjoy the crispy exterior and tender inside.
- For a variation, dust the fritter bites with cinnamon sugar instead of glazing for a different flavor and texture.
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith or sweet Honeycrisp for the best balance of flavor and texture.
- Maintain oil temperature carefully to ensure fritters cook evenly and do not absorb excess oil.
